Analytical Principles of Computer Networks

We present the principles and foundations of computer network analysis to maximize the network utility in this book. The contents are organized in seven chapters including network architecture, delay-based network performance evaluation, network optimization, principles of resource allocation, mechanisms of resource allocation in the network cloud, congestion management mechanisms, and unified network performance evaluation.

In chapter one, we are discussing the principles of computer network architecture and argue how to evaluate the network architecture. In this chapter, three evolutionary stages for computer networks are considered including the emergence of computer networks, supporting multimedia applications, and transition to peer-to-peer architecture. We also emphasize on changing the point of view in-network performance evaluation from the microscopic approach based on computing the packets delays to the macroscopic approach based on the satisfaction level of users.

The fundamentals of queuing theory, analysis, and simulation of infinite and finite queue length M/M/1 queue are presented in chapter two. Following the computing the packets delay in a queue, we discuss how to extend this approach for computing the end to end delay in a network of queues. We also discuss challenges of this approach for computing the end to end delay and deploying that for classic network design problems.

We next present the basic principles of optimization theory in chapter three. We start by modeling and solving some actual network problems like maximum flow by linear programming. Next, the basic concepts of convex optimization are presented, and some examples of convex nonlinear optimization are discussed and solved.

In chapter four, we formulate the network resource allocation as a convex optimization to maximize the sum of users' utilities with fairness and resource constraints. Different criteria for user's utility and fairness are presented and discussed.

In chapter five, the mechanisms of resource allocation in the network cloud, including different schemes of active queue management (RED, BLUE, CHOCKe) and scheduling (GPS, WFQ, WF2Q, SCFQ) are presented and analyzed. Also, we argue about implementing these mechanisms in real networks.

In chapter six, analysis and discussion of congestion management mechanisms at the endpoint using control theory are presented. Next, we analyze the performance of different TCP mechanisms (TCP Tahoe-Reno and TCP-Vegas) using the network utility maximization approach.

Finally, the unified analysis of the resource allocation mechanisms in the network cloud and endpoint in the framework of cross-layer analysis of protocol stack is discussed in chapter seven with some examples.
