- Abstract
In this thesis the special condition of Caspian sea to set up Ocean Thermal Energy Convection (OTEC) systems is studied. For this reason a comprehensive study has been done on the physics of the Caspian sea. Unlike the other tropical oceans in which the temperature reaches around 5 degrees Celcius in the depth of 900-1200 meters, in Caspian sea the temperature of 6 degrees Celcius is available at the depth of only 200 meters. At the same time, as the deepest parts of the sea are in southern parts the most of the water volume is available around the Iran's coast. Moreover, to be able to set up an OTEC power plant, it is necessary to maintain a constant temperature of 28 degree Celcius for warm surface water at the entire year. As Caspian sea is not located in tropical regions, this study showed that it's surface temperature cannot be fixed around 28 degrees and this temperature is obtainable in only 4 months. Therefore, the surface temperature should be boosted by solar energy. To use solar energy some different technology were discussed and economically analyzed. Due to high expenses of solar panels they seem not to be an optimum option to be used in this OTEC project. Alternatively, we proposed to use solar ponds. Solar ponds are cheaper and possible to be installed on Caspian sea. The modeling and analysis of this OTEC power plant in Caspian see is done by EES software.Faculty of Mechanical Eng. of K. N.
