- Abstract
Limited reserves of fossil fuels and environmental pollution caused by burning them, result the development of issues related to environment and energy. Since the early 1970s, the energy crisis and the destruction of the ozone layer and global warming caused law enforcement to provide control of energy consumption. In this situation, due to the limited reserves of fossil fuels and environmental pollution caused by burning them, good design can be leaded to reduced energy consumption by using passive systems methods. Passive solar systems are the most obvious and the most effective strategies. Passive solar systems such as solar chimneys need solar radiation to work. Hence, they cannot present stable natural ventilation when the solar energy vanishes. Therefore, to have a more robust and stable condition, the solar energy should be stored during the day and released back during the night. Phase change materials can save additional thermal energy during the day and release it during the night in order to have stable ventilation. In this thesis, a CFD simulation has been performed to investigate the effect of PCM utilizing in the solar chimney to provide stable temperature and air flow rate for a guard room. The simulation carried out for a whole day in winter for two cases, namely with and without PCM usage. To obtain a proper initial conditions, the simulation has been solved the transient governing equations for 5 successive days. All the governing equations solved by using commercial software, Ansys Fluent. To estimate the solar radiation for the simulation, UDF code has been written and introduced to Ansys Fluent software as a boundary condition. The results show that usage of PCM as an energy storage device significantly enhances the stability of the guard room temperature and the air flow rate in the solar chimney.
